PROLIFIC writer, journalist and academic Adibah Amin was honoured on Monday with the National Press Club (NPC)-Ambank Media Legend Award at the NPC-Naza Awards 2011.

Looking frail but alert in a wheelchair, Adibah, 75, received the award from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The multi-talented Adibah was given the honour for her contributions to both journalism and to academia, especially for her series of books Datanglah ke Kelas Adibah (Come to Class with Adibah). She was also honoured for her column “As I was Passing” in the New Straits Times, which ran for 12 years under her pen name, Sri Delima.

Besides being an award-winning actress, she had penned three books – Bangsawan Tulen, Seroja Masih Di Kolam, and Tempat Jatuh Lagi Dikenang – and produced more than 200 radio dramas. She suffered a stroke in 2007.

The awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, which was held for the second time, was to honour and recognise journalists and editors who have made outstanding contributions to the field of journalism.

Najib also presented the NPC-TM Lifetime Achievement Award to former Bernama news editor Musa Scully and the NPC-Scomi Journalist of the Year Award to The Star’s Shahanaaz Habib.

Two special awards – NPC-Celcom Media Personality and NPC-Maxis Media Icon – were awarded to The Star’s group chief editor Datuk Wong Chun Wai and popular columnist, blogger and formerMalay Mail editor Ahirudin Attan.

Wong was presented the award for his exclusive interview with physicist Stephen Hawking last year. Ahiruddin is best known for his blog, Rocky’s Bru.

The NPC-Celcom Young Journalist of the Year award went to Melissa Ong of ntv7, the NPC-UEM Online Journalist of the Year award to Aidila Razak from Malaysiakini; and the NPC-Sime Darby Blogger of the Year award to Paul Tan of paultan.org.

The NPC-Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin SM Amin 1Malaysian of the Year Award was presented to national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang in recognition of his sporting spirit even after suffering a freak injury at the Track World Cup earlier this year.

The event was sponsored by the Naza Group (title sponsor), Ambank Group, Celcom, Scomi, TM, Sime Darby, UEM Group and Maxis.

As for me,i'm very honoured.I got the chance to be one of her students.Maybe it was only for once a week.I adore you,teacher.She taught me BM and English.From her i learnt super fantastic boombastic words to put in the essays. Never before i called her Teacher@Cikgu.Weird.But that's the fact.For the first class,i had butterflies in my stomach.Actually for every class i attended,i had the butterflies.Early morning,you woke up and had to rush to the class,your body was still in the electric shock condition.Replace the "you" with "i".I got the feeling to go to the toilet for every class but i'm the shy shy cat person who will just stay there,with pencil,reciting doa,please clock,please,turn faster.The class started at 8 and ended at 10.Before i went for the first class,there were so many assumptions i made.I saw her play for Adik Manja movie which astro showed days before the first class started.Her role as a fierce teacher,Cikgu Bedah was really made me had goosebumps but after all,she was just a very nice teacher.A very soft-spoken one.The second class,my cousin joined along!Woohooo!I was so excited.Teacher gave us examples how to answer literature essays and so much more.Every night before the exam,i will just memorized all the essays and alhamdulillah i scored.

2007;Classes were held at nights.As the PMR(2007) was getting near,there was one class she cancelled.Then the next class,i came early.I came as the first.She opened the door.She wore a shawl around her neck.I was feeling awkward at that moment.Her voice was different.And the shawl really bothering me.

Stroke hit her.No classes.Anymore.

I was in my primary school.My brother and his friends went to Mrs Sugu tuition to enhance their English.My mum sent me there.I need English classes.I need English.Two classes for every week.One class i chose the same day with my brother and the other one the same day with my friend.It was a chaos for every class i attended with my brother and the gang.More peaceful the other day but it kind of boring sometimes ,that at that sometimes,i felt alone.One of my brother friends,so close,teacher really fond of him.One day,something went wrong,he merajuk about something i can't remember,teacher crossed the road and sent him some curry.How sweet was that.The boy has grown up.He's in college.Still my brother's best buddy.Whenever i talked with my brother about our english tuition,

"Ingat tak cikgu buat rambut.Kita semua baru sampai elok je rambut dia.Bila kelas dah habis,habis rambut dia macam dulu balik.Haha."

I grew older.I didn't go for her tuition classes anymore start standard 5 or 6.My little cousins went for her classes and i enjoyed watching they completing their homework given by my teacher.I finished secondary school.I went for college.I got back home.My cousins have no english tuition homework anymore.

Stroke hit her.No classes.Anymore.

And now,i'm craving for this.This is Kimchi.Blame the Fs who introduced Kimchi to me.Kimchi taste better than the others(instant noodles,hot cup etc).Means that i have to grab my superman Ts and fly out.No one knows Kimchi here.I have to get it by my own.
